Route 28 Diner

928 Massachusetts 28, South Yarmouth, MA 02664

Route 28 Diner Facebook Page

1. Initial impression of convenience, parking, and location.

  • The Route 28 Diner is conveniently located on Route 28. Set back a tad off of the road, it offers significant parking, and finding a spot out front was not difficult.
  • There was a very pretty garden located beside the establishment, providing a very nice impression of the diner.

2. Wait time to be greeted, seated, and first impressions of staff.

  • When we entered the diner we were greeted immediately with a smile and an offer to be seated in a spot of our choosing. Ooh, options right off the bat!
  • The young girl that greeted us was friendly and looked as though she enjoyed her job.

3. Type of seating, comfort, wait time for server introduction.

  • The atmosphere was exactly what one would expect from a diner. Vinyl booths and stools sat around metallic trimmed tables and counters.
  • Elvis and model cars filled the walls and display cases. One display case housed a Lego interpretation of the diner itself.
  • Reminiscent of establishments the gentleman's brother and he used to call "fart-hole restaurants" due to the holes in the vinyl cushions often exposing the foam inside or covered with similar-coloured-but-never-matching tape.

4. Variety of menu options (too many/too little)

  • The menu provided standard options for a breakfast and lunch diner. The choices were small, and therefore it did not take forever to settle on a breakfast choice.

5. Menu highlights of uncommon items.

  • "The Pit Stop" 2 French toast 2 pancakes 2 mini waffles.
  • They will host your birthday party or private function
  • The uncommon items on this menu would be that there are no uncommon items, which seems to be uncommon on Cape Cod.

6. Speed of food delivery, and first impressions of plating, initial aroma.

  • The food was delivered in a reasonable time, allowing the ability to enjoy the coffee and have the exciting anticipation of the breakfast to be, truly sink in.
  • The plates that arrived were adequate, and not overbearing. There was no concern of having eyes bigger than one's plate here.
  • The scent of breakfast was exciting as per usual. Breakfast is the best meal of the day and should always smell delicious.

7. TASTE!

  • Coffee. Standard. Nothing spectacular, but it was not terrible. Refilled frequently, and with pleasant interactions with the owner/server.
  • The gentleman ordered the "28 Plate" that included 2 eggs, 2 sausage, 2 bacon, 2 pancakes, toast and homefries. During my consideration of the menu the waitress noticed me peeking at the Pit Stop. She introduced us to a lady at the booth behind me raving about the waffles. I stuck to my guns with the 28 Plate. When breakfast was served the waitress brought along a mini waffle for me to try. She quipped she had an in with the kitchen. I hadn't realized she was also the cook. With that story told, let me tell you about the food. The bacon, eggs, pancakes, and tiny waffle were an easy B+. The toast, homefries, and sausage were a C. All totally edible and I cleaned my plate. Very close to what I would expect from "mom's cooking".

  • The lady's two eggs with toast had to be ordered with a side of kielbasa, as the meat is not standard as part of the meal. The kielbasa was delicious and succulent, as all encased meats tend to be. The toast was toasty and buttered just right. The eggs exploded at the touch of my fork, gooing out all over the plate providing a glorious yellow puddle of deliciousness. The home fries were served on the side in a small bowl, which I feel is a wonderful touch. Normally my home fries are good for a few bites at the end of my meal, and I feel wasteful tossing the rest. The perfect amount were provided here, and I easily devoured them all. The taste was that of cooked potato, and a nice addition to the breakfast.

8. Value of product.

  • The prices vs. Product were on par here, the food was good and reasonably priced for a breakfast out.
  • Coffee $1.50 per bottomless cup
  • Side of bacon $2.50
  • 2 eggs and choice of meat not available. 2 eggs $4.95, meat extra.
  • Muffins $1.75

9. Payment options.

  • Cash Only

Overall Rating: 8.5/10

Good:

Service. If you want a pleasant experience to go along with your breakfast, Route 28 Diner is a great place to go. The owners and staff are welcoming and make you feel at home. Portions are appropriate and worth their cost. The butter provided with the pancakes was not a ginormous heap of ice cream scoop shaped whipped milk product that seems to be the norm in the USA. It was provided in rectangular packets which were refrigerated and not frozen, allowing for ease of spreading that did not crush your soft bread.

Bad:

The concerns were minimal, home fries were not spectacular and the gentlemen's sausage was nothing to scream from a mountain top about. The lack of a 2 egg + meat plate was also disappointing.

Overall:

In a previous review we stated profoundly that taste was, above all, the most important part of our breakfast. We do not plan on altering that opinion but would like to amend it. In no world would we continue to eat at a place that served bad food. Although Route 28 Diner's food did not make us moan in delight after every bite, the diner, value and, most of all, its people are enough to entice a return visit. They will probably even remember our faces.
